'Magazine cover learner response

WWW: Maya, a very good application of knowledge and understanding of media language as evidenced by your slick Sport magazine front cover. Your photography, colour scheme and layout all demonstrate controlled elements to communicate clear meanings throughout the product to communicate to a potential audience. The editing of the main cover model is professional and edited to a good standard, well done! We have high hopes for your real coursework production now.

EBI: Naturally, quite difficult to give many criticisms as your work is very good but what I would suggest is ensuring that your masthead (Sport) is clearly visible. When I zoomed into your front cover, the text was slightly blurry compared to the rest of the typography on your front cover. Secondly, the copy (text) below your main cover line would have been better to be separated as you do not usually see full stops on front covers. Finally, a very minor change but check your grammar as the word ‘issue’ should have a capital letter for ‘I’.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.) Notice the focus on narrative in the mark scheme for Media language.

Good application of understanding of media language such as the use of costume however, use a better lighting that focuses on the character

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level? 

I could have thought about the background more thoroughly when planning as this could help me improve the quality of the cover. I could have also taken the image with much better lighting as well as the editing part, where I could have brought the masthead higher and cropped the bottom bit, which would be much more similar to the other vogue covers when it comes to layouts.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed? 

I would suggest planning the background and how they would like their character to pose as well as the costume they want. They should also think about the theme that they want to show their audiences as well as the meanings they want to portray in their cover lines. Also, when editing they should use the other magazines that they are comparing their work with to get the actual layout as well as the similar style.
