Narrative

  1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  Star Wars:  The initial state of equilibrium is the peaceful galaxy under the Galactic Empire's rule.  This is disrupted by the events of the film, including the Death Star attack and Princess Leia's capture, which throws the galaxy into disequilibrium.  The rest of the film is dedicated to the attempt to repair this disruption, culminating in the final battle and the destruction of the Death Star, which restores the galaxy to a new, albeit changed, equilibrium.   2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1).   1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important?                                  Genres are categories or types of media text. Genres are recognisable  through the repeated use of generic codes and conventions. 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?  Visual and aural iconographies are not the only way that genres can be identified. Reception theory

1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert?   Preferred   reading-It suggests that people who have made bad choices in life are able to change their action. The use of the fingerprints do show that identity does stay with you physically. However the actions you do now can change who you are in the future. Negotiated reading-The negotiated reading could be that Reebok presents 50 cents as a criminal or a gangster because of how he is dressed. However having a famous figure subverts this because 50 cents influences people into buying  Reebok  products. Oppositional reading-People may be against this advert because it links to violence. As well as this people may  interpreter  that the  violence  and actions you commit display who you are in  society.
